What is the Florida Parenting Course?

On Behalf of | May 3, 2013 | Firm News

Every state has different laws regarding divorce and, for a court to grant a divorce, you must be in compliance with the state’s rules. Daytona Beach divorce attorneys can explain the Florida divorce process and ensure you comply with all state laws and procedural deadlines.

The Florida legislature passed a law requiring all divorcing couples with children to take a four-hour parenting course called the Parent Education and Family Stabilization Course. The reason behind this requirement is to orient and educate parents toward the best interests of their children when going through divorce and working out custody arrangements. Divorce or separation is stressful for children, and their stress is proportional to the amount of parental conflict involved. The course helps parents understand the following:

  • The court’s process for determining time-sharing and child support disputes
  • Emotional problems and experiences divorcing adults face
  • Children’s emotional concerns and needs during and subsequent to divorce
  • Available community services and resources to help you deal with divorce

The Florida Department of Children & Families provides a list of approved providers that offer the Parent Education and Family Stabilization Course. Some providers offer classroom settings or online courses, and certain providers offer classes in English or Spanish.
